What a Page-Turner!" I am sure you read that exclamation all the time about new books. This time, it is true. The Lies We Told by Camilla Way kept me from doing much of anything for two days. As is the popular story-telling genre of the time..the suspense thriller is told from two different points of view and at two different times and then they converge.
Beth starts the novel in spectacular fashion, recounting an event that starts the tale off with a gasp. (audible gasp, in my case) Meanwhile, sweet Clara in present day, is having her own problems. Her live-in boyfriend, Luke, has disappeared without a trace. Clara and their good friend, Mac, try to investigate Luke's disappearance on their own, peeling the onion of Luke's life that reveals a unsettling surprise or two. Tsk, tsk, Luke.
Luke's parents, his brother, and their long lost Sister, Emily, seem to fit into the mystery but no one knows how. The author is kind enough to leave little “easter eggs.” (easter eggs- clues to where the story is going and may end up) The little hints were not enough for me to figure out the secrets that the two family’s (Luke’s and Beth’s) were hiding, though. Before I knew it, I was completely sucked into this engrossing mystery mostly because Clara is an extremely likable character. What is the deep dark secret that Beth has kept and what does it have to do with Luke? Will Clara and Mac find Luke? Will Clara want him back if they do? Gather the clues as you read them. I doubt you will figure it all out but it will be fun trying. My chores are calling, must run. Let me know what YOU think if you get a chance to read The Lies We Told.
